Climate-Smart Agribusiness Value Chains for Income Generation
,Hatua Kijani (Green Steps) Skills Camp offers young women the opportunity to acquire skills for market-oriented business development along agricultural value chains and practical skills in permaculture design. In a three-week skills camp they develop skills in e.g. establishment of fruit tree nurseries and kitchen gardens, herb production, solar drying of fruits and vegetables, peanut flour and peanut butter production, fruit marmalade and chili sauce production, and natural soap and natural medicine production.

This skills camp equips young women with capacities to produce market-oriented agricultural and value added products applying adequate hygiene and quality standards. They learn how to increase shelf life of their products and hence minimize produce loss. Special focus is put on business development, marketing, financial management, saving and lending in groups, product development for the tourism and hospitality industry, branding and packaging and customer care. The skills camp adopts a gender-sensitive and youth-friendly learning atmosphere and incorporates sports, play and cooking classes to foster a healthy life style and to make participating young women enjoy their stay. It creates new perspectives for income generation for rural women and helps slow the rural-urban exodus.
Training on entrepreneurship links skills development training to the acquisition of knowledge and managerial competencies required to build and manage small businesses efficiently and profitably. Young women are introduced to micro-enterprise concepts and skills in planning, budgeting, recording cash flows, marketing, basic marketing English, digital tools and sales strategies to manage their own enterprise. It fosters a spirit of entrepreneurial culture with regard to self-employment.

Additionally, special training on Black Soldier Fly (BSF) production in connection with poultry farming promotes a viable business venture of insect rearing for integration into animal feed. This training responds to the growing demand for future-oriented agricultural vocational training and the challenge of waste management in the hospitality industry and at household level. BSF bio-waste treatment offers a solution for managing organic waste from restaurants, hotels, street vendors and households while also providing a low-cost alternative protein source to conventional and expensive animal feed. BSF rearing is a sustainable practice that can be carried out with minimal required inputs from home. It is, therefore, an ideal business venture for young rural women who are often constrained by limited access to agricultural resources. The replacement of conventional poultry feed with BSF offers an inexpensive and sustainable source for poultry feed and an innovative approach to venture in the lucrative sector of poultry farming. Another outcome of the process is organic fertilizer, which can be sold or used as an organic fertilizer to increase horticultural productivity on farmland and in kitchen gardens. Skills in BSF production and sustainable poultry farming contribute to climate-smart agriculture, increase climate resilience and foster food security.
