Vocational Skills

For Business Development & Employability
Due to unequal gender dynamics, poverty and cultural norms, women´s access to education and productive resources like land, technology, training and finances is severely restricted in Zanzibar. The lack of capacities and opportunities to contribute to income generation keeps women economically dependent and hinders inclusive economic advancement.
WEZA offers vocational and entrepreneurial skills training to provide relevant capacities for (self-)employment and professional growth. Addressing current skills and product gaps in the flourishing tourism and hospitality industry, WEZA aims at realizing the possible positive impact of this sector on young women´s remunerative employment and sustainable income generation. A combination of market-oriented Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), industry-linked work exposure opportunities, demand-driven product development and proactive encouragement to establish direct market linkages, offers potential to strengthen local and inclusive economic growth.

Even though agriculture has been playing an essential role in Zanzibar´s economy, strategic skills development in terms of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) only slowly starts focussing on this area. Zanzibar´s agricultural industry is characterised by a skills gap and value chain deficit that hinders the industry to fully unlock its potential. The sector is currently experiencing a big shift in terms of production, technology and necessary skills required. The lack of a competent labour force and value chains poses significant hindrances to industry growth. WEZA offers Agriculture-TVET to systematically support small-scale female farmers and entrepreneurs to take up activities with a strong emphasis on business skills and climate-smart value chain development.
