Sport for Empowerment

Most girls in Zanzibar are denied the right to play and to participate in sports. Gender stereotypes, cultural beliefs, early marriage and pregnancy as well as the unequal burden of household chores are amongst factors that hinder girls´ access to sports, play and recreation.

At WEZA we recognize sport and play as effective instruments for empowerment, education, social change and the promotion of health and gender equality.
Engagement in sport offers girls the opportunity to build self-confidence and negotiations skills. It supports girls in strengthening their voice and influence on a societal level and to claim their right to play and to engage in sport activities as well as their right to health and access to health information.

WEZA combines the development and exercise of sports skills with the development of life skills and acquisition of knowledge on health and well-being.

Sport and team sport in particular foster independence of mind, confidence in own judgment, a sense of self-esteem leading to self-actualization and the ability to cooperate and collaborate with others. Girls develop skills to define and solve problems, engage in the imaginative projection of their own ideas and set goals and strategies to achieve them.
