Sports4Girls

Project Sports4Girls uses sport and play as tools to address issues girls and young women are facing, such as gender disparities in access to sports, health education, life skills and leadership roles. It empowers girls to foster independence in mind and confidence in own judgement, to set their own agendas, solve problems and develop self-reliance.

Furthermore, there is a positive relationship between girls involved in physical activities, their psychosocial development and educational success.
Project Sports4Girls also focuses on the need for more female coaches  to ensure girls comfort during training and play. Female coaches further increase the acceptance of girls engaging in sport and play among parents, religious and community leaders.

The project incorporates workshops on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), nutrition and mental health as well as access to quality reusable sanitary pads for all participating girls. The provision of access to essential training equipment like culturally appropriate sports wear, sports shoes, balls and nets contribute to girls´ comfort and continuous attendance.

Project Sports4Girls provides training of coaches in gender-sensitive coaching approaches and a range of purposeful games in order to ingegrate life skills training in their coaching sessions. These new coaching techniques encompass negotiation and conflict management, empathy, teamwork, decision making, problem solving and managing feelings and stress. These skills allow the participating girls to foster individual strengths, self-esteem and skills to resist peer pressure and reduce high risk behaviour. They are empowered to set their own agendas, solve problems and develop self-reliance.

Girls gain skills to apply sports and play to real life situations such a s setting goals and working in a team. They also learn to recognize and act on “teachable moments” that naturally arise during sports training and that allow them to practice solving problems on their own or address a specific local issue.
