Women and girls in Zanzibar face many health challenges and socio-economic factors in correlation with gender inequality increase their vulnerability significantly. WEZA offers health education in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) and nutrition for women and girls to develop knowledge and attitudes necessary for health promotion behaviours, and importantly, for girls´ educational success and persistence in school.
SEXUAL REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
WEZA raises awareness on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Gender Based Violence (GBV) and health risks associated with teenage pregnancy, sexual abuse and drug abuse.
Unplanned teenage pregnancies in school girls and the demand for motherhood often have a negative impact on girls’ abilities to learn and for many, result in them dropping out of school. This underscores the critical need for SRHR interventions to protect themselves and realize their life potential.

MENSTRUAL HEALTH MANAGEMENT (MHM)
Due to little or inaccurate knowledge about menstruation and menstrual practices, in addition to social and cultural restrictions, women and especially girls face many challenges at home, schools, and work places. They often are unable to afford adequate sanitary products due to high cost. In addition, many girls face inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene facilities (WASH) in schools, as well as teasing and fear of embarrassment from menstrual leakage, and thus, rather stay home during menstruation. Inadequate WASH and MHM eventually can lead to a higher drop-out rate of girls and aggravate gender disparities
WEZA offers seminars on MHM for girls and young women and encourages debate over the taboo surrounding menstruation at community level and provides schoolgirls with reusable menstrual sanitary pads.
